A training session for members interested in leading club rides is schedule for Saturday March 25th. Pleasant weather conditions for cycling have finally arrived and it is time to enjoy the arrival of spring to East Tennessee.

This training event will be held at the Howard Pinkston Library, 7732 Martin Mill Pike, Knoxville, TN 37920 at 10:00 am Saturday March 25, 2017. To participate have a current SMW membership and the motivation to grow your circle of cycling friends. The club needs your participation to provide ride opportunities to our membership!

This year’s training session will be a combined ride and learning experience. There is approximately an hour of “book material” that covers the how and why of being a Wheelmen ride leader. Then we will have an actual ride for you to see the mechanics put into practice.
There will be rides of different lengths and rider levels that you can pick to match your abilities.

The club will provide the training materials. Bring your bike, helmet and other necessary gear and dress for the day’s weather. This is a rain or shine event. The class room material will be presented regardless of the weather but the ride will be cancelled in the event of rain.

As a ride leader it will be your decision when and where to lead a ride. You determine the frequency, location and type of ride. For example you can choose to celebrate a once-a-year personal event like a birthday or holiday and incorporate a bike ride with it. If you have a goal of bagging an organized metric or century ride, such as the club’s Cherohala Challenge and need training rides to prepare yourself, that will make excellent opportunities to be a club ride and you’ll have the company of others sharing your goal.

Please reply via email to confirm your participation. Training materials will be provided based on the turnout of candidates. Send your reservation or questions to SWM Ride Captain Barbra Baum, bob1wire@comcast.net or Gary Speer, garyspeer@gmail.com.
Become a ride leader and share the fun once a year, once a month or when ever it fits your schedule. Your talent and enthusiasm are needed and will be appreciated.
